What Is the General Enrollment Period?

the general enrollment period lets you make changes to your Medicare policy

If you’re new to Medicare, there are a few terms and enrollment periods you should familiarize yourself with. Medicare enrollment must occur during very specific times, and the General Enrollment Period is one of them.

The General Enrollment Period

Medicare’s General Enrollment Period lasts from January 1st through March 31st. During this time, anyone can enroll in Medicare or make changes to their current policy. This is an incredibly important time, so mark it on your calendar and speak with an insurance agent about how your policy has worked for you over the last year.

Why Use the General Enrollment Period?

The General Enrollment Period is your chance to reflect over the past year and decide if you’ll want to continue with your current policy into the next year. One of the best ways to do this is by looking at your past medical bills.

  • Was there an area with heightened expenses that weren’t included in your coverage?
    • Would a Medicare Advantage policy have included that coverage?
  • Did you not use an area of coverage that your Medicare Advantage plan includes?
    • Would removing that area of coverage lower your bills?

Medicare Changes

If you’re satisfied with your current policy, you may still want to evaluate if you should make changes. Just as new treatments and therapies are invented each year, Medicare policies can evolve as well. To stay updated on medications and other new offerings, Medicare policies can change. A prescription you use may no longer be covered through your plan or be insured under a different policy. If this is the case, ask an insurance agent about what policy is right for you.

Staying updated on Medicare changes is an important part of maximizing your coverage. Being able to use your insurance means you need to know what it includes and that may change. If that is the case, the General Enrollment Period is the perfect time to enroll in another policy that will fit your needs better.
